Forgery, Fraud and Mystification in Italian Renaissance Art and Music

Falsificare la Storia: falsari rinascimentali elvetici e falso Rinascimento in Svizzera

L'incontro internazionale si svolgerà come evento conclusivo dell'omonimo workshop zurighese, la cui idea è stata concepita a Lugano, all'interno della Fondazione, durante un brainstorming nel febbraio 2020. Se a Zurigo, nei due giorni precedenti, verranno discusse le pratiche attuali della falsificazione, della frode e della mistificazione nella letteratura, nell'arte e nella musica del Rinascimento italiano, a Lugano ci si concentrerà su due aspetti specifici:

  1. I falsi di epoca romana o umanistica, creati in epoca rinascimentale da artisti provenienti dalla Svizzera e in particolare dalla Svizzera italiana

  2. I falsi capolavori o manufatti rinascimentali ricreati tra Otto e Novecento, come La bella principessa di Leonardo,

a cui va aggiunta l’architettura in stile Boito (quella della villetta Giambonini), che riprende motivi classicheggianti falso-rinascimentali



The international meeting will take place as the concluding event of the homonymous Zurich workshop, whose idea was conceived in Lugano, within the Foundation, during a brainstorming in February 2020. The actual practices of Forgery, Fraud and Mystification in the Italian Renaissance Literature, Art and Music will be discussed. Junior researchers from the University of Zurich and a team of international experts from renowned universities will cooperate in order to offer an inspiring and enriching overview on these important themes.

Aims/target result(s): The meeting aims to define more clearly, in an interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary perspective, the problem of counterfeiting and copying during the Italian Renaissance. Since there are plenty of valid studies dealing with the theorical side of this subject (true and fake in theory of literature and arts), the problem of falsification of texts, works of art and music scores will be studied focusing on its practical side and according to strict historical-philological approaches for all disciplines involved. Our study focuses on the Renaissance – the Golden Age of publishing, as a great amount of researchers call it – as a case study and on literature and arts as contexts in which we can take a close look at a practice widely spread in our day and age (the “Digital Age”), in all fields of human communication. The results that will emerge from the activity will allow to problematize and make explicit the definitions of Fake, Forgery and Mystification.


Reconstructing the different counterfeiting strategies, the motivations of the counterfeiters and, best-case scenario, their ideas on the theme of counterfeiting and on the lawfulness of this practice, will make it possible to frame more effectively problems related to the transmission over the centuries of false sources, as in the case of  “fantasmi bibliografici” (i.e. the well-known bibliographic ghosts, or false bibliographic entries: titles and names of authors which were false) with regard to the publishing world, as well as the influence of false on the cultural context in which they were produced and disclosed. The young researchers involved will learn through practice how to discuss such a topic with a large audience. They’ll have to seek for the best strategies in order to reach their goals. To do so, they will cooperate with the experts involved and will learn from them.
